#48.774 Bezahlt in Kindle-Shop (Siehe Top 100 Bezahlt in Kindle-Shop)

I absolutely adored this!Yep, Earth Fathers Are Weird features mpreg, as in a cis human man carrying and giving birth to offspring. There's no weird physiology involved, it's an entirely alien thing that includes an entire people who have adapted to use other species to carry out their young.I loved the worldbuilding here - or rather, the lack of it.Max, an air-force pilot is fighting a supposed alien invasion in one moment and the next he's on an alien spaceship. He doesn't get a lot of explanations other than "your plane was about to explode so we saved you" and "we can't bring you back to your planet but we can bring you to this huge space port". So he has to find a way home himself.I loved how the lack of explanation worked here. No, nobody with a surprisinly high rank or wider understanding sits down with him and explains the wider workings of the universe to him. And even if they did.... Max wouldn't understand.Because translation is a huge problem here.Yes, there is advanced technology - but it's technology, not magic, and doesn't automatically know English. While some basics are known, Max has to manually train the technology words so improve the translation - and it's a slow progress.I did not always know what the characters were trying to say because of that, sometimes even when Max himself understood, but I wasn't too frustrated. There IS a sense and pattern to it, and I can't wait to reread this book and figure it out.I also loved how the author didn't shy away from truly alien aliens. These aliens here are not just basically humans but with colourful skin, an extra limb or two and slightly different features. Nope, they have an actually different physiology.Rick, the alien Max ends up working for, is a straight up tentacle monster-ish being. Kind of like an octopus. Due to the translation issues in the story and Rick's obviously differing body language it wasn't always easy to get a read on him aside from what Max consciously notices, but I still adored Rick. Again, I can't wait to reread the book and pay more attention to him. It's not an entirely perfect book.A few things go unexplained (beyond Max's not knowing), like why exactly the aliens on earth decided to save Max when it seems like they killed another pilot. It's also not explained how Rick's peoples' reproduction works - there doesn't seem to be another person involved (other than a surrogate to carry the children, but there is no genetic mingling between surrogate and offspring). From the very start Max uses he/him pronouns for Rick, but there is no hint pointing to Rick being male (or female or something else) or Rick's people having a concept of gender - or sex - since Max has to explain the concept of male and female humans to Rick. Yet Max also doesn't ask which pronouns Rick prefers (which probably would have been lost in translation anyways, as I can imagine Rick's people not even having pronouns.)Max's pregnancy isn't the main part of the book. It's there, yes, but for a big chunk he doesn't even realize it due to the mistranslation, and there's significant time skips. The parts that are there are.... pretty graphic. There's highly advanced medical imaging technology and very invasive tentacles involved, yet I was surprised how little of a problem I had with it? I 100% expected I would be extremely squeamish reading about various parts of pregnancy and birth, but in this case I wasn't bothered at all. The fact that it's all based on aliens might have helped, along with how Max personally deals with it.Not all parts of how exactly the pregnancy works are explained, which was more of a suspension of disbelief thing than a worldbuilding one, because some details are surprisingly well thought out while others get conveniently ignored.A much bigger part of the book than the pregnancy is the found family theme. I loved it. It's very much focussed on how Max feels, and what he thinks the others feel, but especially with Rick there is a lot of development as well as speculation. As Max - and the reader - gets to know Rick better and the translator improves, so does their relationship and the understanding of Rick's motivations and personality.Books with mpreg are notorious for treating trans people horribly (as in, completely ignoring or straight up denying their existence), which luckily isn't the case of Earth Fathers Are Weird. There wasn't as much trans inclusiveness as I would have liked, but the attempt is there along with general inclusiveness of other identities as well, with Max correcting himself and the language he uses several times.I had an incredibly great time reading this book. I binged it in one sitting, and I want to pick it up again right now and read it one more time, and then again. It has some very much not pretty parts and doesn't shy away from being graphic, but it's also funny and honest and very, very adorable. Definitely a new favourite, and I'll be checking out the author's other books as well.Content warnings include: mpreg (featuring pregnancy and birth), alien abduction, monumental misunderstandings due to translation issues leading to unconsensual pregnancy except neither party knows about the mistranslation/that it's unconcensual, home invastion (in a way) with a hostage situation and extreme violence and threat of torture involving children, sex on-page, lots of very invasive tentacles; mentions of abortion.

The title says it all, weird book! Weird in a really good and surprising way. I admit from the blurb alone I wouldn't have bought it, sci-fi not being my thing. But curious as I am, I read a few of the reviews and when I read about mpreg and little tentacle monsters, I was on board. It wasn't even what I expected, but better.Max has been captured by aliens, after he thought he was defending earth from what was a threat from outer space. Stranded on a spaceport, he finds a job as a nanny that'll hopefully pay for the travel back home. The book has a lot of layers. Learning to communicate with an extrinsical life form, ignoring one's own perception of how people look like and how they behave or getting comfortable in an alien environment. Max took well to everything, using a sarcastic way of talking himself through. Luckily his employer, 'Rick' an octopoid being, was a curious guy, also interested in learning. Things got awkward for a moment, when Max realized, he was used as a surrogate for Rick's offspring, but in the end he adapted and got very attached to the little monsters, once they were born. So much so that he was willing to defend them with his life, when their spaceship gets infiltrated by pirates. Max and Rick still had to steer through some cultural and linguistic misunderstandings, but I guess they get each other in the end.Very fascinating book. Great writing style, with a few minor hiccups. Definitely not what you'd expect from a tentacle monster/mpreg story. So, if you don't mind mpreg or the fact that one of the MCs is an octopoid being, give this book a try. My rating 4,5 stars.
